Black Squirrels on Parade Project: From Idea to Realisation

The idea – to turn black squirrels into symbols through artistic sculptures – was realised in 2016 when 34 five-foot (about 1.5 metre) fibreglass statues of black squirrels were installed in Meriville. Each figure was painted by local and regional artists. Each has its own name, with themes often related to business, society or nature.

One of the figures is called Eve and is located near the city stage in the park and equipped with information plaques telling about squirrels and their history. Some sculptures, such as Choo-Choo, are inspired by Mexican art style and are located near the railway depot.

Looking at the city map, you can find the figures either on foot or by car – they are scattered across different neighbourhoods, creating an exciting route for tourists.

What to see: route details

The route is uneven because not all sculptures are located in the centre; some are far from others, so you will need a map or navigation.

Key attractions on the Black Squirrels on Parade route:

  • The Eve statue in the city park, with Choo-Choo signs near the railway depot.
  • Freedom Spirit near the army building, with American symbols.
  • Lucy with concentric patterns on her tail
  • figures dedicated to medical workers, sports and local businesses

There are art routes where each figure is accompanied by a sign with a description, allowing you to combine a walk with a mini-tour of history and art.

Practical tips for tourists

If you plan to visit Maryville and walk the Black Squirrels on Parade route, keep the following recommendations in mind:

  • Get a map of the route – many tourist offices in the city distribute them for free.
  • If possible, take the walk during the daytime: the details of the colours are easier to see in good lighting.
  • Wear comfortable shoes – walking around the city may involve pavements and small inclines.
  • Consider the distances involved – you may need to drive between groups to see all the sculptures.
  • Ask permission before taking photos – some of the figures are located near private buildings.
  • Visit the city information service or museum – they will tell you which figures are currently active.
  • Combine your walk with other city attractions – this will make your visit more enjoyable.

These tips will help make your Black Squirrels on Parade tour comfortable, safe and interesting.
